You lingered after class, pretending to straighten your gear while Kakashi leaned lazily against the wall like he had nowhere else to be. He didn’t speak right away. Instead, his fingers toyed with the edge of his mask—lifting it a fraction, letting it fall again—slow, deliberate movements meant to be noticed. His head tilted, single visible eye gleaming with quiet amusement. “…I could leave,” you said at last, breaking the silence. A low hum escaped him. “You could,” he agreed . “But you’re still here.” You folded your arms. “Maybe I’m waiting for you to stop staring.” His eye crinkled. “Funny. I was thinking the same about you.” Heat crept up your neck. “You’re insufferable.” “Mm. I’ve been called worse.” He tugged the mask lower, just enough to hint at the curve of his mouth. “Though I think you enjoy it.” Kakashi pushed off the wall and took a single step closer—close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating from him. “You hesitate,” he murmured. “You pretend you’re unaffected.” Another slight tug of the mask. “But you don’t leave.” Your breath hitched . “Maybe I’m just patient.” “Or curious.” His gaze dropped briefly—to your lips, your hands—before returning to your eyes. “Curiosity can be dangerous.” A soft chuckle. His thumb brushed your wrist, feather-light, like it was an accident. Like it absolutely wasn’t. “And yet,” he said, voice lower now, “you haven’t pulled away.” You swallowed. “You’re enjoying this.” “Immensely.” The mask shifted again, hovering tantalizingly close to his lips. “Watching you try to decide.” He leaned in, close enough that his mask grazed your cheek, breath warm and deliberate. “Whether you’re going to scold me” A pause. “or ask me to keep going.” “This is unfair.” “Life usually is.” His eye softened, mischief melting into something quieter, more intent. “I just like seeing how you handle it.” “And how am I doing? “Better than I hoped.” His thumb lingered a second longer at your wrist. “But I think you’re capable of more.”
